Buchanan is a port city on the Atlantic coast of Liberia, the capital of Grand Bassa County, lying about 110 kilometres south-east of the national capital Monrovia. Named after an early governor of Liberia, it grew as an industrial and shipping town and is home to the Port of Buchanan - the country's second-largest port, originally built for iron-ore exports and still handling ore, rubber and other commodities. It is a working coastal city rather than an established tourist destination, though it has broad Atlantic beaches, a relaxed seaside atmosphere and the culture of the Bassa people. For most travellers it is a regional hub on the coastal route through Grand Bassa County. Liberia has a tropical climate with a long, heavy rainy season from roughly May to October; the drier months from November to April are far easier for travel.
