Bishkek is the capital of Kyrgyzstan and the main gateway to the country, served by Manas International Airport just north of the city. A leafy, Soviet-planned city set on a plain at the foot of the snow-capped Kyrgyz Ala-Too range of the Tian Shan, it is the natural starting point for exploring one of Central Asia's most mountainous and beautiful nations. The city itself offers wide boulevards, parks, bazaars such as Osh Market, and Soviet-era squares and monuments, but its greatest asset is proximity to the mountains: Ala-Archa National Park, an alpine canyon with hiking and climbing, sits under an hour's drive south. Bishkek is also the springboard for the great lake of Issyk-Kul, the summer pastures of Song-Kol and the wider Kyrgyz highlands. Summer (June to September) is the prime mountain season; winter is cold with nearby skiing.
