Boset is a remote locality in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, in the vast, flat Trans-Fly lowlands of the far south-west near the Fly River and the border with Indonesian Papua. This is one of the least-developed and most isolated corners of PNG - a landscape of savanna, seasonal wetlands, monsoon forest and slow rivers, part of the broader Trans-Fly region known ecologically for its birdlife, wallabies and distinctive wildlife more akin to northern Australia than the New Guinea highlands. It is not a tourist destination: there are no roads to speak of, and travel across the region depends on rivers and light aircraft. Any visit is expedition-style and arranged in advance. The tropical climate has a marked wet season and a drier season; the drier months are more favourable for travel across this waterlogged lowland country, though conditions are always demanding.
