Bonanza is a small mining town in the northeast of Nicaragua, in the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region, deep in the forested region of Mosquitia. It is one of the three towns, together with Siuna and Rosita, that make up the famous mining triangle of Nicaragua, a region long known for its gold, where mining and small-scale panning remain a way of life. Bonanza sits in a green, remote landscape of rainforest and hills, near the great Bosawas Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest areas of tropical forest in Central America and home to Mayangna and Miskito indigenous communities. It is a working town rather than a tourist resort, a window on a wild and little-visited corner of the country. Bonanza is reached by long roads through the interior and by small aircraft into its airport. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with very heavy rainfall for much of the year.
