Boke is a town in north-western Guinea, capital of the Boke region, in the country's great bauxite belt near the Rio Nunez not far from the Guinea-Bissau border. It is above all an industrial and mining centre - the heart of one of the world's largest bauxite-producing areas, from which the ore is railed to the coast for export - rather than a tourist destination. Its history reaches back to the Atlantic trade era, when the Rio Nunez was a route to the interior; the old riverside fort, the Fortin de Boke, survives as a reminder of that past. For travellers, Boke is chiefly a regional hub on the route through Lower Guinea toward the coast and the border. Guinea has a tropical climate with a heavy rainy season from roughly June to October; the drier months from November to May are easier for overland travel.
