Bamyan is a town and provincial capital in the central highlands of Afghanistan, set in a broad valley of the Hindu Kush, historically one of the most celebrated places on the Silk Road. It is best known for the Buddhas of Bamiyan - two monumental statues carved into the cliffs between the 3rd and 5th centuries, part of a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape, and infamously destroyed by the Taliban in 2001, leaving the great empty niches that still draw the eye. Nearby lies Band-e-Amir, Afghanistan's first national park, a chain of astonishingly blue lakes dammed by natural mineral walls high in the mountains.
