Anguilla is a low-lying coral island in the northern Caribbean, a British Overseas Territory at the top of the Leeward Islands, famous above all for its beaches - a string of dazzling white-sand bays and turquoise water widely rated among the finest in the region. Quieter and more understated than its busier neighbours, it has built a reputation as a discreet, upmarket beach destination, with celebrated strands such as Shoal Bay, Meads Bay, Rendezvous Bay and Maundays Bay, a lively beach-bar and grilled-seafood scene, and clear waters for snorkelling and diving. The island is reached via its own airport (code AXA) with regional connections, or by ferry and boat from neighbouring Sint Maarten/Saint-Martin. The dry, sunny high season runs roughly December to April; late summer into autumn is the Atlantic hurricane season, quieter and with some seasonal closures.
