AWD is the airport code for the airstrip on Aniwa, a small island in the far south of Vanuatu, in the South Pacific, in the Tafea province, the nearest large island being Tanna, about 24 kilometres to the southwest. Aniwa is a low, raised coral island, rising only a little above the sea, ringed by reef and known for its beautiful turquoise lagoon and clear, shallow water, ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Unusually for the region, Aniwa is a Polynesian outlier, its people descended from Polynesian settlers rather than the Melanesians of most of Vanuatu, giving it a distinct culture and language. It is a quiet, traditional island of villages, coconuts and reef, well off the tourist track. Aniwa is reached by small aircraft from the capital, Port Vila, a couple of times a week, and by boat. The climate is warm and tropical, with a wetter, cyclone-risk season.
