Anyang is a city in northern Henan Province, China, best known as the home of Yin Xu - the ruins of Yin, the last capital of the Bronze Age Shang dynasty and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was here, on the banks of the Huan River northwest of the modern city, that the oracle bones bearing the earliest known Chinese writing were unearthed, making Anyang one of the most important archaeological sites in the country and a cornerstone of ancient Chinese history. Beyond Yin Xu, the region is associated with the Red Flag Canal, a monumental mid-20th-century irrigation project in the nearby mountains. Anyang sits on the rail corridor of the North China Plain, easily reached from Zhengzhou and en route between there and Beijing, and spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons to visit.
