Andavadoaka is a coastal village in south-western Madagascar, on the Mozambique Channel between Toliara (Tulear) and Morombe, known as the heart of Velondriake - Madagascar's first locally managed marine area, established in 2006 by a network of Vezo fishing communities. It has become a small but genuine destination for divers and marine-conservation travellers, thanks to the reefs offshore and the pioneering community-led conservation work associated with the organisation Blue Ventures. The setting is classic south-west Madagascar: turquoise lagoon, coral reefs, baobab-dotted spiny forest inland, and the semi-nomadic Vezo fishing culture. Access is by a long overland journey or light flight from Toliara, and the drier, cooler months from around April to November are the usual season for diving and settled coastal weather.
