Amurzet is a rural town (selo) in the Jewish Autonomous Oblast of the Russian Far East, the administrative centre of Oktyabrsky District, lying near the Amur River that forms the border with China, about 250 kilometres from the regional capital Birobidzhan. It was founded in 1929 as a collective farm and became a centre of Jewish agricultural settlement in the region south of Birobidzhan, part of the Soviet-era project to create a Jewish homeland in the Far East. Today it is a quiet farming settlement rather than a tourist destination, of interest chiefly for that unusual history and its remote riverine setting on the frontier with China. The region's continental climate brings warm summers and severe, snowy winters, with late spring to early autumn the more accessible season.
