Al Ain is the UAE's Garden City — the oasis town where the founding Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan grew up, and the only inland city in the Emirates. It sits on the border with Oman, 160 km east of Abu Dhabi and 130 km south of Dubai, reachable by 90-minute drive on the E22 Al Ain-Abu Dhabi Truck Road. There's a domestic airport (AAN) with a handful of regional flights, but most international travellers come through Abu Dhabi's Zayed International or Dubai International and drive. The city's UNESCO World Heritage Site — Al Ain Oasis and the six surrounding oases — is the main reason to visit, along with Jebel Hafeet (a 1,240-metre desert mountain with one of the great driving roads in the Middle East), the Al Ain National Museum, the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum, and the 4,500-year-old Hili Archaeological Park.

Getting to and around Al Ain
Al Ain Oasis is a free, walkable UNESCO site in the heart of the city — 3,000 hectares of date palms (150+ varieties) irrigated by the 3,000-year-old falaj system of underground channels. Allow 90 minutes for the walk, visit the small eco-centre at the southern gate for context. Jebel Hafeet's summit drive is a 12-kilometre switchback with six viewpoints, best attempted at sunset — the mountain view stretches across the dunes to Abu Dhabi. Al Ain Zoo is one of the best in the Middle East with a dedicated white-lion enclosure. The camel market (Souq Al Jimal, 10 km north of the centre) is the largest in the UAE and runs Tuesday-Sunday mornings — spectacular but bring a tolerance for desert dust.
Things to see & do in Al Ain
Plan one or two overnights. Day 1: Al Ain Oasis morning + Al Ain National Museum + Sheikh Zayed Palace + Al Ain Zoo afternoon. Day 2: Hili Archaeological Park morning + Jebel Hafeet drive + sunset at the mountain summit. Most visitors combine Al Ain with 3-4 days in Abu Dhabi or Dubai rather than making it a standalone trip.

Neighborhoods & food in Al Ain
Climate is classic UAE-inland: November through March is 18-28°C and perfect; April-October is 35-45°C with the hottest temperatures in the country. Visa rules mirror the rest of the UAE — most Western and East Asian passports get 30-day visa-on-arrival. AED cash is rarely needed; tap-to-pay works everywhere. Driving is on the right; the E22 highway is excellent.
