Ahvaz is a large city in the southwest of Iran, the capital of the Khuzestan province, set on the banks of the Karun river, the largest river in Iran, near the border with Iraq. It is a major industrial and transport city, long known as the oil capital of Iran, at the heart of the country's great oilfields in Khuzestan. The Karun flows right through the centre of Ahvaz, crossed by a number of large bridges that have earned it the nickname of the City of Bridges, and the riverbanks are the focus of city life. Ahvaz is a hot, low-lying city with a diverse population of Persians, Arabs and others, in a region rich in history and resources. It is one of the hottest cities in the country, with fierce summer temperatures. Ahvaz is reached by flights into its airport, from Tehran and other cities, and by rail and road. The climate is extremely hot and dry, especially in the long summer.
