Agra is the city of the Taj Mahal — and while it's tempting to reduce it to a single-day detour from Delhi, the town also holds two other UNESCO-listed monuments (the red sandstone Agra Fort and the abandoned Mughal capital of Fatehpur Sikri) plus some of the best tomb architecture in India at Itmad-ud-Daulah (the 'Baby Taj') and Sikandra. It sits 230 km southeast of Delhi in Uttar Pradesh, reachable in 2 hours 15 minutes on the Gatimaan Express train from Hazrat Nizamuddin, 3-4 hours by road on the Yamuna Expressway, or a 40-minute domestic flight into Agra Airport (AGR, also known as Kheria).

Getting to and around Agra
The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset every day except Friday (closed for prayers). Arrive at the East or West gate before sunrise for the quietest light and the fewest crowds in the photograph — tickets are split between the main monument (pay at the ticket counter or online at asi.payumoney.com) and a separate entry for the mausoleum itself. The mausoleum interior is worth the extra fee but the crowd control is tight; plan 2-3 hours for the full site including the gardens and the view from the riverbank.

Things to see & do in Agra
Agra Fort is the other essential stop — a sprawling red sandstone complex where Shah Jahan spent his last years imprisoned by Aurangzeb, with a view of the Taj across the Yamuna river. Spend 60-90 minutes. Fatehpur Sikri is 40 km west — the ghost-town capital Akbar built in the 1570s and abandoned 14 years later due to water scarcity. It makes a half-day trip; a pre-booked driver from Agra is the cleanest way to go (3-4 hours round trip including the site). Save time for the inlay-marble workshops around Taj Ganj if you want to buy authentic pietra dura work — vet the shop first; many copies are sold as original.

Neighborhoods & food in Agra
Visit November through March for the dry, mild weather (10-25°C). April-June is brutally hot (40-45°C) and July-September is monsoon. Most international visitors need an Indian e-Visa, which takes 72 hours to approve at indianvisaonline.gov.in. The Indian rupee (INR) is cash-heavy for small vendors; cards work in hotels and top restaurants; ATMs are common. Carry bottled water and a stomach-kit of basic OTC medicines — the tap water is not potable.
