Ahmedabad is Gujarat's largest city and India's only UNESCO-listed Historic City — a dense, walkable old town of 600+ pols (micro-neighbourhoods) laid out by Sultan Ahmad Shah in 1411 and now ringed by the modernist architecture of Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn, and B. V. Doshi. It sits on the Sabarmati River, 5 hours by road from Mumbai or a one-hour flight into Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD). The city is dry — Gujarat state has prohibition — but makes up for the lack of alcohol with some of India's best vegetarian food, a pilgrimage-worthy Mahatma Gandhi heritage trail, and a textile and embroidery scene that supplies half the world's denim and most of the global block-print fabric market.

Getting to and around Ahmedabad
The old city morning walk — offered by the Ahmedabad Heritage Walk Trust every day at 8 AM from Swaminarayan Mandir to Jama Masjid — is the single best introduction: 2 hours through the pol courtyards, step-wells, chabutaras (bird feeders), and carved wooden havelis. Sabarmati Ashram is the site where Gandhi lived from 1917-1930 and launched the Dandi Salt March from; the small museum is free, quiet, and worth 90 minutes. Calico Museum of Textiles (reservations required days in advance) holds one of the world's best historical-textile collections. Le Corbusier's Sanskar Kendra and Mill Owners' Association Building plus Louis Kahn's IIM campus round out the architecture trail.
Things to see & do in Ahmedabad
For food, Manek Chowk night bazaar turns on after 10 PM with pani puri, sandwich stalls, and the famous ghee-fried khaman dhokla stands. Upscale Gujarati thalis at Vishalla (south of the city, outdoor village setting) or Agashiye (rooftop at the House of MG heritage hotel) are worth the trip. Farsan (savoury snacks), fafda-jalebi mornings, handvo, and the sweet-and-sour signature Gujarati thali are the must-tries.
