Albina is the capital of Suriname's Marowijne District, a small river town on the west bank of the Marowijne (Maroni) River, which forms the border with French Guiana directly opposite Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. For most travellers Albina is a staging point rather than a stay: it is where you cross to French Guiana by a short pirogue or ferry ride of about 15 minutes, and where boats set off upriver to the Maroon villages of the interior. The town itself is workaday - practical shops, transport connections and river life - reached by road from Paramaribo in roughly two to three hours. Come in the drier stretches for easier river travel, and settle border and onward-transport details before you arrive, as crossing times and services shift.
