Sania Ramel Airport (TTU) serves Tetouan, a historic city in northern Morocco near the Mediterranean coast and a short drive from the Rif mountains, and a rental car opens up both the medina-rich old town and the beach towns and mountain villages scattered across this corner of the country. The airport is a small facility just outside Tetouan, with rental counters run by international and local operators, and its modest size compared with Tangier's busier airport means pickup here is typically quick and low-hassle.
From TTU, central Tetouan and its UNESCO-listed medina are only a short ten-to-fifteen-minute drive, while the Mediterranean beach town of Martil is closer still, reached in around fifteen minutes along the coastal road. Many travelers use TTU as a quieter alternate to Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport, roughly forty-five minutes to an hour to the west, useful when Tangier flights are pricier or fuller. Heading into the Rif mountains south of Tetouan, the hillside town of Chefchaouen, famous for its blue-washed streets, is roughly an hour to ninety minutes away along a winding mountain road that climbs steadily out of the coastal plain.
Driving is on the right throughout Morocco, and the coastal roads around Tetouan and Martil are generally well paved and busy in summer with beach traffic, while the mountain route toward Chefchaouen narrows and winds considerably, with switchbacks that reward a smaller car and an unhurried pace. Morocco's toll network covers some of its major national highways further south and toward Casablanca, but the roads immediately around Tetouan and up into the Rif are largely toll-free. Fuel stations are frequent near the coast but thin out on the mountain approach to Chefchaouen, so it is sensible to fill up before heading into the hills. Summer heat and heavy coastal-town traffic in July and August are the main seasonal factors worth planning around in this part of northern Morocco.
