Rent a car in Sfax from either of the city's two practical pickup points: Sfax-Thyna International Airport (SFA), about six kilometres southwest of the centre, where Hertz has maintained an agency alongside brokers listing Sixt, Europcar and keddy, or downtown offices near the main hotels and the railway station. Sfax is Tunisia's second city and its business capital, so the rental market leans weekday-commercial rather than resort-seasonal - availability is steadier than the coastal charter airports, but so is demand for automatics, which remain the scarcer option. From here the road network fans out well: Tunis is about three and a half hours north on the A1, El Jem's amphitheatre under an hour, and the Kerkennah ferry connects from the port for an island detour. Bring licence, passport and a credit card in the driver's name.
