Car rental at Puerto Plata's Gregorio Luperon International Airport (POP) is desk-served and straightforward: Enterprise places its counter about 50 metres from the exit on its own location page, and Alamo, Budget, Avis and Europcar all list POP airport service, so the arrivals routine feels familiar. The real decision is whether to drive the Dominican north coast at all: resort guests shuttling between Playa Dorada and the cable car may not need a car, while the coast road rewards one - Sosua and Cabarete's beaches to the east, the 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua inland, and Amber Cove and Taino Bay cruise arrivals adding day-rental demand in season. Drive defensively: Dominican traffic mixes motorbikes from every direction, and night driving outside towns is best skipped.
