About Port Royal

Port Royal sits at the tip of the Palisadoes — a narrow spit of land that protects Kingston Harbour. In the 17th century, it was the richest and most notorious port in the New World, home to pirates like Henry Morgan. An earthquake in 1692 sank two-thirds of the city into the sea, and the sunken ruins are still there beneath the harbour.

Fort Charles, built in 1656, still stands — Nelson served here. Gloria's seafood restaurant is legendary. The ferry from Kingston waterfront takes 20 minutes and drops you into a fishing village that happens to sit on top of a sunken pirate city.

Port Royal is one of the most historically significant sites in the Caribbean, and Jamaica's most underrated day trip from Kingston.
