Nanny Falls is a series of cascading waterfalls in the Rio Grande valley above Moore Town, named for the Maroon National Hero Nanny and traditionally considered sacred by the Windward Maroons. The falls sit at the end of a 45-minute hike from the Moore Town village square, climbing through tropical rainforest along the Stony River. The pools beneath the falls are cold, deep, and swimmable, and the setting -- forest canopy overhead, ferns lining the rock walls, a small natural cave behind the main cascade -- is one of the most atmospheric waterfalls on the island.
The hike requires a local guide. The Maroon Council operates a rotating guide roster from the Moore Town Council House, and the fee supports the village. The trail is not strenuous but it is wet -- water shoes or old sneakers are essential, and guests should expect to wade three or four stream crossings on the approach.
Drive time from KIN is 2.5 hours on the A4 Junction Road; from MBJ the drive is 4.5 hours. The Irie Island SUV handles the Rio Grande valley road best. Most Nanny Falls visits are combined with the Maroon Heritage Trail in Moore Town on a Full Day chauffeur at $1,500 for twelve hours in the right vehicle for your party. Compare tours and excursions for combined Maroon heritage and waterfall days, and find a nearby stay for San San or Port Antonio bases. Rio Grande valley properties commonly install Starlink given the minimal fibre footprint.
The falls are significantly more dramatic in the wet season (May-November) but the trail is muddier.
