Boston Bay Beach and Jerk Centre is the ancestral home of Jamaican jerk cooking -- the stretch of Portland coast where the smoked-pepper-and-pimento marinade originated with the Maroons in the hills above Long Bay, and where the highway now lines up half a dozen open-air jerk pits drawing both coast-trippers and day-trippers from Kingston and Port Antonio. The beach itself is small, horseshoe-shaped, and one of the few reliable surf breaks on Jamaica's east coast, with a consistent 3-to-5-foot break that makes Boston Bay the island's default surf lesson venue.
The jerk centre is not a formal attraction but a cluster of family-run pits along the A4 at the top of the bay. Mickey's, Little David's, and Boston Jerk Centre are the three most consistently excellent. Each serves pork, chicken, sausage, and sometimes fish over pimento wood, with festival dumpling or hard-dough bread on the side.
Drive time from KIN is 2 hours on the A4 over the Junction Road; from MBJ the drive is 4 hours and is usually combined with an overnight in Port Antonio. The Irie Island SUV is the preferred vehicle -- the north-Portland road is winding and a higher-clearance ride is more comfortable. Meet and greet at either airport is standard. Most Boston Bay stops are combined with Reach Falls, Winnifred Beach, and the Blue Lagoon on a Full Day chauffeur at $1,500 for twelve hours in the right vehicle for your party.
