Long Bay Beach in Portland is a mile-long, wide, undeveloped stretch of caramel sand backed by sea-grape trees and a few small guesthouses -- the kind of beach that tells you exactly how the east coast of Jamaica looked before the resort era. The surf runs bigger here than at Boston Bay next door, which keeps the crowd thin and turns Long Bay into a mid-week Portland favourite for body-boarders and long walkers. The water is clear, the sand is deep, and the beach has no formal amenities beyond a pair of small bar shacks at the southern end.
The village at the back of the beach -- Long Bay itself -- has a handful of guesthouses, a jerk pit, and a small vegetable market. The Blue Lagoon sits 25 minutes south; Reach Falls is 30 minutes east; the Boston Bay jerk centre is 10 minutes north.
Drive time from KIN is 2.5 hours on the A4 Junction Road; from MBJ the drive is 4.5 hours. The Irie Island SUV is the preferred vehicle. Most Long Bay visits are part of a Port Antonio circuit, pairing with Boston Bay, Reach Falls, and the Blue Lagoon on a Full Day chauffeur at $1,500 for twelve hours in the right vehicle for your party. Compare tours and excursions for east-coast combined days, and find a nearby stay for Long Bay cottages or Geejam in San San. Villas on the Long Bay headland commonly run Starlink.
Swim with caution. The surf is stronger than it looks and the beach has no lifeguard.
