Wake Island is a tiny, remote coral atoll in the western Pacific Ocean, roughly between Hawaii and Guam, and a territory of the United States. It is not a tourist destination: Wake is a restricted United States military installation, used as an airfield and support base, and access is limited to authorised military and government personnel and permitted contractors. The atoll, made up of three low islets around a lagoon, has an important place in Second World War history, remembered for the fierce Battle of Wake Island in 1941, and remains strategically valuable as a mid-Pacific airfield. For the general traveler, there is no way to visit, and there are no visitor facilities or services. Wake is reached only by military and official flights. The climate is tropical, warm and humid year-round, and the atoll lies in a region exposed to Pacific typhoons.
