Tbilisi is the capital and largest city of Georgia, in the South Caucasus, set in a valley along the Mtkvari, or Kura, River. It is an atmospheric city where Europe and Asia meet, known for its Old Town of narrow lanes, wooden balconies and hillside churches. Its trademark sights include the domed brick sulphur bathhouses of the Abanotubani district, the ancient Narikala Fortress reached by cable car, the Mother of Georgia statue, and the huge modern Holy Trinity Cathedral. Along the river, the glass Bridge of Peace links the old and new districts, and Rustaveli Avenue is the main boulevard. Tbilisi is also a gateway to the wider country, from the wine region of Kakheti to the high Caucasus mountains around Kazbegi, celebrated for its hospitality, food and wine. It is reached by Tbilisi International Airport and by road and rail. Summers are hot, and winters are cool and damp.
