Simara is a town in the plains of southern Nepal, in the Bara district of Madhesh province, on the flat, fertile lowland of the Terai near the Indian border. It is best known for Simara Airport, a busy little domestic airport that is one of the main air gateways to the southern plains, with frequent short flights of around twenty minutes from the capital, Kathmandu. Simara serves the nearby city of Birgunj, one of the largest cities in Nepal and a major crossing point on the border with India, a short drive to the south. The surrounding region is a gateway to the wildlife of the Parsa Wildlife Reserve and to the temples and towns of the central Terai. Simara is reached by frequent flights from Kathmandu and by road on the main routes between the capital and the Indian border. The climate is hot and humid on the plains, with a hot season, a monsoon and a mild, dry winter.
