Gokuleshwar is a small town in the Baitadi district of Sudurpashchim province, in the far west of Nepal, in the hill country of the Mahakali region near the border with India. It lies in a landscape of terraced hills, rivers and ridges, in one of the most remote and traditional parts of the country, far from Kathmandu. The far-western hills of Nepal, sometimes called Devbhoomi, the land of the gods, are dotted with old Hindu temples and pilgrimage places, and the region has a strong religious and cultural life. Gokuleshwar is a modest local centre for the surrounding villages and farms. It is reached by the hill roads of the far west, from the district headquarters at Baitadi and the lowland town of Dhangadhi to the south. The climate ranges from warm in the valleys to cool in the hills, with a summer monsoon.
