Saranac Lake is a village in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York State, set among lakes and forested peaks and named for the chain of Saranac Lakes nearby. It grew in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a famous health resort, where patients came to be treated for tuberculosis in fresh-air cure cottages, a heritage still visible in its architecture and local museums. Today it is a friendly mountain town and a base for exploring the Adirondacks, with hiking, paddling on the lakes, fishing and winter sports, and it hosts a long-running Winter Carnival with an ice palace. The nearby High Peaks and Lake Placid are within easy reach. Saranac Lake is reached mainly by road, with a small regional airport at nearby Lake Clear and larger airports further afield. The climate has warm summers and cold, snowy winters.
