Rotuma is a remote island in the far north of Fiji, lying about 465 kilometres north of Viti Levu, Fiji's main island, out on its own in the South Pacific. Although it is a dependency of Fiji, Rotuma stands apart in both distance and culture: its people, the Rotumans, are Polynesian in origin, with their own language and traditions, distinct from the mainly Melanesian majority of the rest of Fiji. It is a green, volcanic island of hills, gardens, white beaches and clear lagoons, ringed by reef, one of the most isolated and unspoilt corners of the country. Rotuma is reached by a weekly Fiji Airways flight from the capital, Suva, taking about an hour and a half, or by a long sea voyage of up to two days by ship. The climate is warm, humid and tropical throughout the year.
