Qaanaaq, formerly known as Thule, is one of the northernmost towns in the world, in the far northwest of Greenland, high above the Arctic Circle on the shore of a fjord facing the frozen sea. It is a small Inuit town in a spectacular, extreme Arctic setting of ice, sea and mountains, where the traditional culture of the Inughuit, the polar Eskimos, remains strong, and people still hunt on the sea ice, travelling by dog sled. Qaanaaq experiences months of polar night in winter and the midnight sun in summer, and is surrounded by glaciers, icebergs and Arctic wildlife. It is one of the most remote inhabited places on earth, of interest for its extreme location and living Inuit culture. Qaanaaq is reached by small aircraft on the long Arctic air routes within Greenland. The climate is high-Arctic, cold and dry, with a brief, cool summer.
