Marsabit is a town and mountain in the far north of Kenya, about 550 kilometres north of Nairobi, rising as a green, forested oasis out of the surrounding desert. Mount Marsabit is an extinct volcano whose cool, misty heights capture moisture from the air, cloaking the slopes in dense forest that contrasts sharply with the dusty plains and the nearby Chalbi Desert. The mountain is protected as Marsabit National Park and Reserve, dotted with volcanic craters, some holding crater lakes known locally as gofs, including the famous Lake Paradise. The park is a refuge for elephants, once celebrated for having some of the longest tusks in the world, along with buffalo, greater kudu and abundant birdlife. Marsabit is a key stop on the long route north toward Ethiopia and Lake Turkana. It is reached by road or a small airport, and the highland climate is cooler than the deserts around it.
