Malabo is the capital of Equatorial Guinea, a small central African country, unusually located not on the mainland but on the volcanic island of Bioko, in the Gulf of Guinea off the coast of Cameroon and Nigeria. The city sits on the rim of a sunken volcanic crater that forms its natural harbour, backed by the green slopes of the island. Malabo has a distinctive character, blending Spanish colonial heritage, seen in its old cathedral and colonial-era buildings, with African and more recent oil-boom modernity, as the country has become a significant oil producer. The island of Bioko around it is lush and mountainous, with rainforest, the Pico Basile volcano and rich wildlife including rare primates and, on remote beaches, nesting sea turtles. Malabo is reached by flights into its international airport. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with heavy rainfall.
