Leonora is a small town in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, about 230 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie in the state's dry outback. It grew from the 1890s gold rush and remains a working mining and pastoral centre, but its best-known attraction sits just beside it: the ghost town of Gwalia. Gwalia grew around the Sons of Gwalia gold mine, once the largest in Western Australia outside Kalgoorlie, and was largely abandoned when the mine closed in 1963. Its preserved miners' cottages and museum, together with Hoover House, the former mine manager's residence where a young Herbert Hoover once worked, make up a striking historic precinct. Leonora is reached by long sealed roads across the outback or via a small local airport. The climate is hot and dry, with warm days and cold desert nights in winter.
