Aklavik is a small Inuvialuit and Gwich'in community on the western side of the Mackenzie River Delta in Canada's Northwest Territories, just above the Arctic Circle. Once the administrative centre of the western Arctic, it was slated to be abandoned in the 1950s because of flooding, and the government built the town of Inuvik to replace it, but many residents refused to leave, giving Aklavik its motto, Never Say Die. Today it remains a close-knit community rooted in trapping, hunting and Delta life, surrounded by a maze of waterways rich in fish and wildlife. Aklavik is reached only by air year-round through its local airport, and in winter by an ice road across the frozen Delta from Inuvik, about 60 kilometres east; float planes use the water aerodrome in the open-water season. Winters are long and severe, while short summers bring the midnight sun.
