Kowanyama is a remote Aboriginal community on the western side of Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, Australia, near the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Mitchell River delta, about 600 kilometres northwest of Cairns. Its name means place of many waters in the local Yir Yoront language, reflecting a landscape of rivers, wetlands and seasonal floodplains. Importantly, Kowanyama is Aboriginal freehold land, and visitors need a permit from the community council to enter or camp; it is not an open tourist destination. For those with permission, the area is known for its fishing, birdlife and strong living Aboriginal culture, shared by the Kokoberra, Yir Yoront and Kunjen peoples. Access is by light aircraft to the local airport or by unsealed roads that are often cut off in the wet season. The tropical climate has a hot, wet summer and a drier winter.
