JNJ is the airport code for the airstrip at Jaaluni, a remote desert station in central Oman, on the vast gravel plain of the Jiddat al-Harasis, in the Al Wusta region. Jaaluni is best known as the field station of the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary, a great desert reserve in the heart of Oman, where the Arabian oryx, a magnificent white desert antelope once hunted to extinction in the wild, was famously reintroduced from the 1980s. The surrounding Jiddat al-Harasis is a stark, beautiful land of open desert and coastal hills, home to the oryx, gazelle and other desert wildlife, and to the Harasis people. It is a remote, operational and conservation area rather than an ordinary tourist destination. Jaaluni is reached by long desert roads across central Oman and by its airstrip. The climate is hot and extremely dry, with cooler nights and coastal mists.
