Mukhaizna is not a tourist destination but a large oil field in the Al Wusta desert of south-central Oman, more than 500 kilometres from the capital, Muscat. It is one of Oman's biggest heavy-oil developments, known in the energy industry for its large steam-flood operation, and access is restricted to those working in the industry. There is no town, resort or public attraction here. Travelers interested in this remote part of Oman generally focus instead on the wider Al Wusta region, whose highlights lie on the coast, such as the growing port city of Duqm and the long, empty beaches and wadis of the Arabian Sea shore, reached via the main road network and regional airports. The desert interior is extremely hot and dry, and any travel across it requires proper vehicles, supplies and planning.
