Ibaraki Prefecture lies on the Pacific coast of Japan, north-east of Tokyo in the Kanto region, and Ibaraki Airport (near Omitama) is a small low-cost gateway to the area. The prefecture is best known for Hitachi Seaside Park, a vast coastal park famous for its seasonal flowers - most spectacularly the blue nemophila that carpets Miharashi Hill in spring and the fiery red kochia bushes in autumn - which draw visitors from across Japan and beyond. Ibaraki also offers Kairakuen in the city of Mito, one of Japan's three great landscape gardens, renowned for its plum blossoms; the sacred Mount Tsukuba; the dramatic Fukuroda Falls; and the giant Ushiku Daibutsu, one of the world's tallest statues. A largely rural prefecture of coast, countryside and gardens within easy reach of Tokyo, it rewards day trips and short stays. Spring and autumn are the standout seasons for the flowers and colour.
