Haugesund is a coastal town in Rogaland, on the west coast of Norway, at the heart of a region steeped in Viking history and Norwegian national identity. Just north of the town stands Haraldshaugen, the national monument marking the traditional burial place of Harald Fairhair, the king who first unified Norway - giving the area its claim as the homeland of the Viking kings, celebrated on the nearby island of Karmoy at Avaldsnes. A former herring-fishing town, Haugesund today is a lively coastal centre known for its waterfront, its film and jazz festivals, and its position as a gateway to the fjords, islands and dramatic coastline of western Norway. The nearby Ryfylke region and the outer islands offer spectacular scenery. Haugesund has its own airport with domestic and some international flights. Late spring to early autumn is the best season.
