Negele, also written Neghelli or Negele Borana, is a town in the Guji and Borana country of southern Ethiopia, in the Oromia Region toward the country's dry southern lowlands. It is a market and administrative centre in the pastoralist heartland of the Borana Oromo, known for their cattle-herding culture and traditional deep singing wells, set in a landscape of savanna and acacia scrub. For travellers, Negele is chiefly a waypoint in Ethiopia's remote south, on the routes toward the Kenyan border, the Genale and Dawa rivers, and birding areas such as the Liben Plain, home to the rare Liben lark. It is a working regional town rather than a tourist centre. The lowland climate is warm and dry with rains around March to May and October to November; the drier months are generally easier for travel on the region's long roads.
