Balıkesir is a mid-sized inland Turkish city — provincial capital of Balıkesir Province in the southern Marmara region, population around 260,000 — and the logistical hub of the Edremit Gulf tourism zone. Most international travellers don't visit the city itself; they pass through on the way to Ayvalık (90 km west — island-hopping + olive oil, just north of Lesbos), Edremit and Akçay (coastal resort towns between Ayvalık and Assos), Ayvacık and Behramkale (old Assos, with its 6th-century BC Temple of Athena and Aristotle's three-year residency), or further west to Çanakkale and Gallipoli. Balıkesir's own domestic airport is Koca Seyit (EDO, 120 km west on the Edremit coast) or the small Merkez Airport (BZI, 8 km from the city). Most flights use BZI only sporadically — travellers typically fly into İzmir (120 km south) and drive.

Getting to and around Balikesir
In-town attractions are modest. The city's Central Mosque (Zağanos Paşa Camii, 1461) is the Ottoman landmark; the clock tower on Cumhuriyet Square is the gathering spot; the covered bazaar does some of the best Turkish rug work in the region. The Archaeology Museum has a small collection from the nearby Lydian and Mysian sites. Most travellers' Balıkesir-city time totals 2-3 hours — usually a meal break between longer stages of a road trip.
Things to see & do in Balikesir
The surrounding province is where the interest lies. Lake Manyas (Kuş Cenneti, 90 km north) is a Ramsar-listed wetland bird sanctuary — 250+ species, best in spring-fall migrations. Kazdağları National Park (Mount Ida, 50 km southwest of Edremit) has oxygen-rich highland forests that locals will swear are the cleanest air in Turkey. Ayvalık's Cunda Island (90 km west, connected by bridge) has some of the best fish restaurants on the Aegean coast.
