ALK is the airport code for Asella Airport, serving Asela, a highland town in the centre of Ethiopia, in the Arsi zone of the Oromia region, about 150 kilometres south of the capital, Addis Ababa. Asela stands at around 2,400 metres above sea level, in the cool, green highlands beneath Mount Chilalo, in a fertile farming region famous for its wheat, barley and cattle. The town is best known, above all, as the home of some of the greatest long-distance runners the world has ever seen, including Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele and Tirunesh Dibaba, who grew up in these high hills. It is a busy market and university town rather than a tourist resort, a good base for the mountains and farmland of Arsi. Asela is reached by road from Addis Ababa and by its small airport. The climate is a mild highland one, cool for the tropics, with a main rainy season in the summer.
