Hawassa (also spelled Awasa or Awassa) is a city on the shore of Lake Hawassa in the Great Rift Valley of southern Ethiopia, and the capital of the Sidama Region. Set beside one of the Rift Valley's most attractive lakes, it is a relaxed, green city known for its lakeside setting, its lively morning fish market at the pier, birdlife and hippos on the water, and its role as a gateway to southern Ethiopia and the cultures of the Omo Valley beyond. A popular weekend and conference destination for Ethiopians, Hawassa lies about 270 kilometres south of Addis Ababa on a good main road, making it one of the easier Rift Valley lakes to reach. The highland-tempered climate is mild year-round; the drier months, broadly October to May, are generally the most comfortable for travel and lakeside time.
