Suceava is the historic capital of the Bukovina region in northeastern Romania, and car rental at Suceava's Stefan cel Mare International Airport (SCV) is the natural way to reach a countryside dotted with UNESCO-listed painted monasteries, working farms and forested hills near the Ukrainian border. The airport is compact, with pickup handled through a small cluster of international and local desks just outside arrivals, so visitors are typically on the road within a short walk of the terminal, ready for a landscape built around slower, scenic driving rather than fast transit.
From Suceava, national roads fan out toward the region's best-known sights: the painted monastery at Voronet is around thirty minutes southwest, Moldovita and Sucevita sit roughly an hour further into the hills, and the historic town of Gura Humorului makes a comfortable stop along the way. These routes run mostly on two-lane national roads such as the DN17A and DN2, which wind through farmland and forest and reward an unhurried pace rather than speed. Romania drives on the right, and every vehicle using national and motorway-grade roads needs a rovinieta, an electronic road-use vignette purchased online or at border crossings and fuel stations rather than paid as a per-trip toll; most rental agencies include it or explain how to buy one at pickup.
Non-EU visitors should carry a home-country license together with an International Driving Permit, since a translation reduces friction at any roadside check. Bukovina's winters are genuinely cold and snowy, with the hillier routes toward the monasteries seeing ice and reduced visibility from late autumn through early spring, so allow extra time and expect some rural roads to be less promptly cleared than the main national routes. In summer, the same roads are green, quiet and ideal for a full day looping between monasteries before returning to Suceava for the evening.
