Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), also known as Dubai World Central, is Dubai's second airport, located in the Dubai South district roughly forty kilometers southwest of downtown Dubai, and a rental car is a genuinely useful way to connect the airport with the city's main attractions and highway network. The terminal hosts counters from a range of international and local rental companies, and picking up a car here is typically efficient given the airport's lower passenger volumes compared with Dubai International.
From DWC, central Dubai and its well-known landmarks are reachable in roughly thirty to forty-five minutes via Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, known locally as the E311, a major multi-lane highway that runs parallel to the coast and connects most of Dubai's southern and central districts. Emirates Road, the E611, offers an alternative inland route toward the same areas and toward neighboring emirates, useful for avoiding congestion on the more heavily used E311 corridor during peak hours.
Driving is on the right throughout the United Arab Emirates, and Dubai's road network is modern, well signed in both Arabic and English, and generally excellent by international standards. One local detail worth knowing before you drive: Dubai operates the Salik electronic toll system, which charges automatically at set gates along major roads including sections of the E311, so a rental car needs a linked Salik tag or account, something worth confirming with your rental company at pickup rather than discovering at your first toll gate.
Fuel stations are plentiful throughout the city and along the highways connecting DWC to central Dubai, and traffic is heaviest during the morning and evening commute along the E311 corridor. Expo City Dubai and the growing Dubai South business district sit close to the airport itself, making DWC a practical starting point for exploring this rapidly developing southern edge of the city before heading into its more established center.
