Can You Use US Dollars in Jamaica?
Yes β and most tourists do. US dollars are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and shops in tourist areas across Jamaica. You can pay your bar tab in USD, buy souvenirs in USD, and tip in USD without any issues.
However, there is a catch. When you pay in USD, the vendor sets the exchange rate β and it is almost never in your favour. A restaurant might use J$140 to the dollar when the actual rate is J$155. On a $50 dinner, that is roughly $5 lost to a poor conversion. Multiply that across a week-long trip and the difference adds up.
The rule of thumb: use USD for convenience at tourist-facing businesses, but use JMD for local markets, street food, taxis, and anywhere the exchange rate markup would be significant.
Where to Exchange Money in Jamaica
Cambios (FX Bureaus)
Licensed cambios offer the best walk-in exchange rates in Jamaica. You will find them in major towns β Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Negril, Kingston. Rates are posted on boards and are typically within 1-2% of the mid-market rate. Bring your passport for ID verification.
Bank Branches
Scotiabank and NCB (National Commercial Bank) are the two largest banks with branches island-wide. Their exchange rates are decent but not as competitive as cambios. The upside is security and receipt documentation.
ATMs
ATMs dispense Jamaican dollars. Your home bank's exchange rate applies, plus any international withdrawal fee (typically $3-$5 per transaction). Scotiabank and NCB ATMs are the most reliable and widely available. Withdraw larger amounts less frequently to minimise per-transaction fees.
Airport Exchange
Avoid exchanging money at Sangster International Airport (MBJ) or Norman Manley (KIN) if possible. Airport exchange counters offer the worst rates β often 5-10% below the market rate. If you must exchange at the airport, change only enough for immediate needs (taxi, tips) and exchange the rest at a cambio in town.
Tipping in Jamaica
Tipping is expected in Jamaica and is a significant part of service workers' income. Here is the general guide:
- Restaurants: 10-15% if service charge is not included. Check your bill β many restaurants add a 10-15% service charge automatically.
- Hotel staff: US$1-2 per bag for porters. US$2-5 per day for housekeeping.
- Tour guides: US$5-10 per person for a half-day tour. US$10-20 for full-day excursions.
- Taxi drivers: 10-15% of the fare, or round up to the nearest convenient amount.
- Bartenders: US$1-2 per drink at standalone bars. At all-inclusive resorts, tipping is discretionary (some discourage it, others welcome it).
US dollars are preferred for tips in tourist areas. JMD is fine everywhere else.
Typical Costs in Jamaica (2026)
- Local lunch (jerk chicken plate): J$800-1,500 (US$5-10)
- Restaurant dinner for two: US$40-80 at mid-range restaurants
- Red Stripe beer: J$300-500 at a bar (US$2-3)
- Bottled water (1.5L): J$150-200 (US$1)
- Local taxi ride (short): J$500-1,000 (US$3-7)
- Dunn's River Falls entry: US$25-30 for adults
- Blue Mountain coffee (1 lb): US$25-40 at source
How to Avoid Bad Exchange Rates
- Never exchange at the airport unless you absolutely must.
- Use ATMs for JMD and decline Dynamic Currency Conversion.
- Carry some USD for tourist-facing businesses, but know you are paying a convenience premium.
- Use cambios for the best walk-in rates on cash conversion.
- Check the mid-market rate on your phone before exchanging β Bank of Jamaica publishes daily rates.
- Negotiate in JMD at local markets and with taxi drivers β they often give a better deal when you pay in local currency.
For Frequent Visitors and Long Stays
If you travel to Jamaica multiple times a year or spend extended periods on the island, the small exchange rate differences on daily spending become significant over time. For larger transfers β rent payments, property maintenance, or supporting family β a dedicated forex platform offers meaningfully better rates than airport cambios or bank wires.
WorldFirst is worth considering for competitive FX rates on larger international transfers. For daily spending, though, the ATM-plus-cambio combination remains the most practical approach for most visitors.
