You have booked your flights. You have locked in your resort. Your private airport transfer is confirmed. Now comes the part that trips up even experienced travellers: the suitcase.
Jamaica is not a one-climate destination. You will feel equatorial heat on the coast, cool mountain air in the Blue Mountains, tropical rain showers that arrive without warning, and the aggressive Caribbean sun that burns faster than you think. Packing smart means arriving ready for all of it.
This is the only packing list you need.
Clothing: Light, Breathable, and Layerable
Jamaica's average temperature hovers between 27 and 33 degrees Celsius year-round. Cotton, linen, and moisture-wicking fabrics are your best friends. Leave the heavy denim and dark synthetics at home.
Daytime essentials:
Lightweight shorts and breathable tops
Swimsuits (at least two, so one can dry while you wear the other)
A cover-up or sarong for walking between the pool and restaurant
A wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap for sun protection
Evening wear:
Smart-casual outfits for resort dining (most all-inclusives have dress codes for evening restaurants)
A light cardigan or long-sleeve shirt for air-conditioned restaurants
Comfortable sandals that can handle both beach bars and dinner tables
The layer you will be glad you packed:
A packable rain jacket or lightweight windbreaker. Afternoon rain showers are common, especially between May and November. They pass quickly, but they are intense.
Sun Protection: Take This Seriously
The Caribbean sun sits high and hits hard. Sunburn can ruin the first three days of a trip if you are not prepared.
Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+): Jamaica's coral reefs are under protection. Many tours and beaches now require reef-safe formulas. Look for mineral-based sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Avoid oxybenzone and octinoxate.
Sunglasses with UV protection: Polarised lenses make a real difference on the water.
Lip balm with SPF: The one most people forget.
Insect Repellent: Non-Negotiable
Mosquitoes are active in Jamaica, especially near gardens, mangroves, and during dusk. Bring a DEET-based or picaridin-based repellent for outdoor activities. If you prefer natural options, lemon eucalyptus oil works reasonably well. Many resorts provide repellent in rooms, but having your own means you are never caught without it.
Waterproof Phone Case
If you are climbing Dunn's River Falls, bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae, or swimming in the Blue Lagoon, your phone is coming with you. A waterproof phone pouch (the lanyard style that lets you still use the touchscreen) costs a few dollars and saves you from a very expensive replacement.
Footwear: Bring the Right Shoes
Jamaica is not a flip-flops-only destination. Pack these three pairs:
Water shoes or sturdy sandals with grip -- essential for waterfall climbs like Dunn's River Falls, Blue Hole, and Reach Falls. Smooth river rocks are slippery.
Comfortable walking shoes -- for heritage tours, garden visits, plantation walks, and cobblestone streets in Falmouth.
Evening sandals -- dressy enough for resort restaurants.
Leave the heels and heavy boots at home unless you are heading to Kingston for business.
Tech and Connectivity
Universal power adapter: Jamaica uses Type A and Type B outlets (the same as the US and Canada). If you are travelling from the UK or Europe, bring an adapter.
Portable charger/power bank: Long days of excursions drain batteries fast.
No need for a portable WiFi device: If you are travelling with Aurum Transfers, every vehicle in our fleet is equipped with Starlink satellite WiFi. You will have fast, reliable internet from the moment you step into your transfer -- perfect for posting arrival photos, messaging family, or pulling up your resort confirmation.
Travel Documents
Valid passport: Check your expiration date. Jamaica requires at least six months of validity remaining.
Return or onward flight confirmation: Immigration may ask for proof of departure.
Hotel or resort booking confirmation: Printed or saved to your phone.
Travel insurance documents: Strongly recommended. Medical evacuation from Jamaica can be extremely costly without coverage.
COVID-19 documentation: Requirements change. Check Jamaica's official travel advisory before departure.
Prescription Medications
Bring all prescription medications in their original labelled containers, along with a copy of your prescription. Jamaica has pharmacies in major towns, but specific medications may not be available, and you do not want to spend holiday time searching for a pharmacy.
Pack a small first-aid kit with:
Pain relievers
Anti-diarrheal medication
Antihistamines
Motion sickness tablets (if you are taking mountain roads or boat tours)
Blister plasters
Money: US Dollars and Jamaican Dollars
Jamaica operates on a dual-currency system in tourist areas. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere -- resorts, restaurants, tour operators, taxis, and craft markets. However, you will often get better value paying in Jamaican dollars (JMD) at local shops, roadside jerk stands, and markets.
Our recommendation:
Bring US cash in small denominations ($1, $5, $10, $20) for tips, small purchases, and market haggling.
Exchange a small amount to JMD at the airport or a cambio (exchange bureau) for local purchases.
Major credit cards are accepted at resorts, restaurants, and larger attractions. Visa and Mastercard are most widely accepted.
Notify your bank before travelling to avoid card blocks.
Hydration: We Have You Covered
One thing you do not need to pack: extra drinks for your airport transfer. Every Aurum Transfers vehicle comes stocked with complimentary cold water, and the air conditioning keeps you comfortable from touchdown to resort. After a long flight, that first blast of cool air and cold water makes a real difference.
What to Leave at Home
Expensive jewellery: Leave it in the safe. You will not need it at the beach.
Excessive luggage: Most excursions require you to travel light. One checked bag and a carry-on is plenty for a week.
Camouflage clothing: It is illegal to wear camouflage-pattern clothing in Jamaica. This law is actively enforced. Military-style camo prints of any colour are not permitted.
Illegal substances: Jamaica has relaxed laws around small amounts of cannabis, but bringing any controlled substance into the country is a criminal offence.
