Varna is Bulgaria's third-largest city and the biggest on its Black Sea coast, a lively port and seaside resort known as the country's maritime capital. It combines sandy beaches and a summer holiday buzz with a long history: it was founded by Greek colonists as Odessos and has notable Roman remains, including some of the largest Roman baths in the Balkans, while its archaeological museum holds the famous Varna gold, among the oldest worked gold in the world. At the heart of the city is the Sea Garden, a large seafront park with gardens, a zoo and beaches. Varna is also the gateway to nearby coastal resorts such as Golden Sands and Albena, and to the historic town of Nesebar further south. It is served by Varna Airport, with many seasonal flights, and by road and rail from Sofia and beyond. The climate is temperate, with warm, busy summers and mild winters.
