Silistra is Bulgaria's last town on the Danube - a river city of around 50,000 in the country's northeastern corner, where the land border with Romania meets the water. Its pedigree runs deep: this was Roman Durostorum, a legionary base two thousand years old and the birthplace of Flavius Aetius, the general remembered for defeating Attila the Hun. Today the draw splits between the riverfront - a long Danube park promenade with Romania on the far bank - and the wetlands west of town: the Srebarna Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage lake of some 600 hectares just south of the Danube, where close to 100 bird species breed on the Via Pontica migration flyway, Dalmatian pelicans the stars among them. Come in spring or early summer for the birdlife, and treat Silistra as slow riverside Bulgaria - unhurried, uncrowded and genuinely historic.
