SHL is the airport code for Shillong Airport, serving Shillong, the capital of the state of Meghalaya in the hilly northeast of India. Shillong is a cool, green hill station set among pine-covered hills and lakes at around 1,500 metres, long known as the Scotland of the East for its rolling landscapes and mild climate. It is a lively, cultured town, home to the Khasi people, with a strong music scene, colourful markets, colonial-era churches and Ward's Lake and Umiam Lake nearby. Meghalaya is famous above all for its extraordinary rainfall and living root bridges, especially around Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong, and for its waterfalls and caves. The airport is a little way from the city, and many travelers also arrive via Guwahati in neighbouring Assam. Shillong is reached by road through the hills and by flights. The climate is mild, cool and often wet, with a very heavy monsoon.
